Depths of the sea

Description

This artwork deals with the seafarers and the mysteries that are in the depths of the sea.

Those who go down to the sea in ships,

who work in the great waters,

These witnessed the works of the Lord

and his wonders in the depths of the sea

(Psalms 26:22)

The “Baal Shem Tov” (Rabbi Yisrael Ben Eliezer – founder of the Hasidic movement) says that apart from the simple meaning, which speaks of what is in the depths of the sea, these verses can be interpreted in another way:

The verses speak of the souls descending into the world. Just as the sea covers what is within it, the body too envelops the soul within it.

There are souls who reach a good environment with an education of faith and observance. Unfortunately, there are souls who reach a harsh environment in which they may be lost (in Hebrew, the word “ship” has two meanings: boat and sorrow). Lucky for them, there are those who “work in the great waters” – who go down to the sea and the great waters and search for the lost souls to save them.
